Week in Review – 1/30/17: Spring in Full Swing with Baseball, Men's Volleyball, and Softball Earning First Wins of the Season

Baseball

The No. 15 baseball team notched their first two wins of the season against the Irvine Valley College Lasers this past weekend beginning with a 7-6 walk off victory on Friday. Sophomore first baseman Vincent Byrd II (Sacramento, CA) launched a two-run homer on his first swing of the season to give the Vikings an early lead. After surrendering the lead, Long Beach used a four run bottom of the ninth to haul in the win. Sophomore reliever Chase Ambrose (Long Beach, CA) earned his first-career victory after tossing two shutout innings and fanning three batters. In the Saturday victory, the Vikings used seven runs in the first two frames to work towards the triumph. Byrd II continued his hot hitting by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman catcher Robert Barham (Long Beach, CA) had a day at the dish by going 4-for-5 with four RBI, while freshman shortstop Tyler Wilber (Los Alamitos, CA) and third baseman Reese Berberet (Fallbrook, CA) each barreled three hits. Freshman pitcher Josh Agnew (Long Beach, CA) earned the win after tossing six innings and fanning four batters. Softball

The Vikings hauled in one win this weekend by defeating Glendale College by the final score of 8-5. Freshman pitcher Vanessa Montanez (Lakewood, CA) earned the victory in the circle after chucking six innings and striking out seven batters. Freshman shortstop Amanda McCalip (Bellflower, CA) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while freshman center fielder Cynthia Ruiz (Long Beach, CA), freshman second baseman Alvia Soulliere (Paramount, CA), and freshman third baseman Alissa Cienfuegos (Carson, CA) each recorded two base knocks. To see the remaining season schedule, click here.

Men's Volleyball

Long Beach handled Grossmont with ease on Friday by earning a straight-set victory. Freshman outside hitter Cyrus Fa'Alogo (Salt Lake City, UT) led the way for the Vikings by hammering home 14 kills off 27 attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Travis O'Gorman (East Northport, NY) and sophomore middle Elai Mama (Moreno Valley, CA) combined for 14 kills, while sophomore setters Gary Trejo (Downey, CA) and Jayce Ashment (Gilbert, AZ) each dished out 17 assists. To see the remaining season schedule, click here.

Women's Basketball

The Vikings were able to squeak out a 60-59 victory against the Cerritos College Falcons on Friday night by playing a man down in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter. With two of their leading scorers fouling out in the fourth, freshman point guard Janay Wellington (S.D. Paradise Hills, CA) took control of the offense and recorded the team's final five points that included the game-winning free throw with one second remaining. She also finished with 13 rebounds and seven assists. Freshman guard Vivian Hernandez scored 17 points on the night which included a 5-for-11 mark from distance. Men's Basketball

The Vikings dropped two conference games last week to LA Southwest and Cerritos College, respectfully. The most recent loss to the Falcons was decided by five points, as the Vikings could not hold on in the latter half of the game. Freshman guard William English (Long Beach, CA) flushed 20 points off the bench after going 4-for-7 from downtown. Sophomore guard Breamon Richard (Los Angeles, CA) backed him with 13 points and six assists, while freshman guard Matt Arrivas finished with a double-double afte hauling in 12 boards and recording 11 points. To see the remaining season schedule, click here.
