Viking Athletics Week in Review – 3/13/17: Men's Volleyball Tops No. 4 Golden West, Beach Volleyball Remains Undefeated, Softball Captures Win in Conference Opener

LBCC had yet another successful week with numerous victories and major pushes towards the top of the standings.

Men's Volleyball

After rising in the California Community College Men's Volleyball Coaches Association (CCCMVCA) poll, the No. 5 Vikings hauled in two crucial victories against Fullerton and No. 4 Golden West. After cruising past Fullerton in a match-sweep, the Vikings defeated No. 4 Golden West in four sets in a highly anticipated contest. Freshman outside Cyrus Fa'alogo (Salt Lake City, UT) recorded a game-high 16 kills, with freshman opposite Noah Taitano (Carson, CA) backing him with 13 kills. Sophomore middle Elia Mama (Moreno Valley, CA) was a monster in the middle by notching 10 kills and seven total blocks. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.

Women's Beach Volleyball

The Vikings remained undefeated on the year by sweeping past Saddleback with a 5-0 victory. New pairings were just as effective for Long Beach as freshman Jordan Diaz (La Habra, CA) and freshman Marina Adolpho (Long Beach, CA) acted as the most dominant duo by not allowing their opponent to reach double-digit points. Sophomore Sarah Miller (Long Beach, CA) and freshman Paige Panter (Southlake, TX) remained undefeated on the season by taking care of business in two sets. Sophomore Geraldine Poon (Long Beach, CA) and freshman Valeria Payan (Pacoima, CA) cruised to an easy, two-set win as well. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.

Men's and Women's Track & Field

The Vikings competed in the 2017 Occidental Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic this Saturday. Freshman Seayanna Crawford highlighted the women's performances by landing the lone top-10 finish for the Vikings. She placed ninth overall in the 400M with a solid mark of 1:01.24. Freshman Courtney Varela backed her efforts by placing 15th overall in the 400M with a time of 1:03.14.Freshman Marlene Contreras performed well in the Javelin by tossing a mark of 22.12m to earn 15th place. Freshman Larissa Bohay followed by placing 17th overall with a mark of 21.60m.Sophomore Willie Jenkins paced Long Beach by placing 63rd overall in the 800M with a time of 2:02.60. Freshman Alex Hoskins finished with a time of 2:20.53 to place 89th, while freshman Isaac McKenzie placed 90th with a time of 2:26.99. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.

Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving

The Vikings' hit the road to compete in the 39th Annual Cuesta College Swim Invite.

Women

Freshman Samantha Wooley landed three top-10 finishes highlighted by a fifth-place showing in the 100 Back with a time of 1:03.38. Cori Reynolds placed fourth-overall in the 50 Breaststroke by touching the wall with a time of 34.35.

Men

Sophomore Mark Denison had a solid meet by notching three top-15 finishes highlighted by an eighth-place showing in the 100 Free with a time of 48.44. Sophomore Aaron Mowl earned a bronze medal in the 100 Back with a time of 54.53 and followed with a fourth-place showing in the 200 Back by touching the wall at a mark of 2:03.62. Freshman Ryan Sar placed 11th in the 50 Free with a time of 25.47.

Softball

The Vikings went 2-2 on the week highlighted by a 2-0 conference-opening win over Cerritos. The Vikings scored both of their runs in the first inning with freshman pitcher Alissa Cienfuegos (Carson, CA) barreling an RBI-triple to score sophomore second baseman Daisy Velasquez (Bellflower, CA). Sophomore third baseman Denise Flores (Carson, CA) recorded the other RBI. Cienfuegos earned the victory in the circle as well by tossing a complete game shutout en route to seven punch outs. Baseball

The No. 13 Vikings baseball went 1-2 on the week with their lone win coming against the East Los Angeles Huskies in conference action. Freshman starter Josh Agnew (Long Beach, CA) highlighted the Viking efforts by tossing his first-career complete-game shutout to earn his fifth win of the season. He allowed just a pair of hits while fanning six batters. Long Beach's offense was dominant as well by barreling 15 hits with sophomore shortstop Antonio Monroy (Maywood, CA) going 4-for-4 with two RBI. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.
