Viking Athletic Week in Review- 9/11/2017: Men’s Soccer Continues Winning Streak, Football Falls in Home Opener

Football- Long Beach Falls to Saddleback in Second Half

The Long Beach City College Viking football team fell to the Saddleback Gauchos 45-35 in the highly anticipated home opener on Saturday evening. The Vikings looked for redemption after falling to the Gauchos last year in the SoCal Regional game. After taking the lead in the first half, the Vikings ran out of steam and couldn't keep up to Saddleback's momentum building second half. Sophomore wide receiver Jabari Minix led the team with receiving 153 yards and averaged 13.9. Sophomore defensive lineman Adebayo Soremekun led the team defensively with eight tackles, five solo and four assisted and while recording a sack in the first quarter and a QB hurry. Men's Soccer- Men's Soccer Continues Winning Streak Against San Diego City College

Men's soccer defeated the San Diego City College Knights 1-0 Friday afternoon on home turf. The Vikings are on a five-game undefeated winning streak and are off to their best start under head coach Cameron Beaulac. Sophomore defender from Los Alamitos High School, Julio Guerrero, scored from a corner kick assist from freshman midfielder Alfredo Figueroa in the 21st min in the first half. Women's Soccer- Women's Soccer Ties Golden West College 1-1

Viking women's soccer tied the Golden West College Rustlers 1-1 Friday afternoon at the Vikings Soccer Field. After taking the lead in the first half at the 43rd minute, The Rustlers scored to ultimately tie the game in extra minutes. Freshman forward from Warren High School, Jennifer Delgadillo, smashed a goal from an overhead kick into the back of the net. Long Beach then took control offensively and aggressively for the rest of the half and kept the Rustlers out of the box until extra minutes in the final half. Women's Volleyball- Women's Volleyball Falls to Irvine Valley 3-0

The Long Beach City College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to visiting Irvine Valley College on Friday evening. LBCC lost by scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-21 to fall to 1-3 overall. The Vikings got behind early and couldn't bring themselves out of the hole. Sophomore Tatyana Umi led the team with 27 total attacks and 13 kills. Women's Water Polo

The women's water polo team opened their season with a 26-3 conference win at LA Trade Tech. Women's water polo will play again on Wednesday, Sept. 13 in their home opener at 3 p.m. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.


Men's Cross Country

The men's cross country team ran in the Fresno Invitational on Saturday morning. The team collected 309 points and placed 12th. Rafael Gonzalez was the top finisher for the Vikings and placed 46th out of 162 runners with a time of 22:08.1. To view the remaining season schedule, click here.
