Men’s Volleyball: Vikings swept at home by Irvine Valley to open match schedule
It definitely wasn't the season-opening match Long Beach City College men's volleyball head coach Randy Totorp was expecting. On Friday night, the Vikings were swept at home by visiting Irvine Valley College in both teams' first match of the season.
Irvine Valley (1-0) won the non-conference match by scores of 30-19, 30-18, and 30-19.
"We just didn't play well," said Totorp. "IVC came out strong from the start and we couldn't really get anything going offensively."
Sophomore setter Chris Austin (Las Vegas, NV) led the Vikings with 33 assists, eight digs and four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Parker Del Re (Gilbert, AZ) had a team-high 13 kills and also added five digs while freshman right side Max Wechsung (St. John Bosco HS) chipped in with 10 kills.
Long Beach suffered just two losses all last season and begins the 2011 schedule with a 0-1 record. The Vikings will look to get back on track on Wednesday (Feb. 9) when they travel to Golden West College for a 6 p.m. non-conference match.
