The Long Beach City College men's volleyball team rolled to a 3-1 Western State Conference win over visiting Moorpark College on Friday night at LBCC. Long Beach won the match by scores of 25-23, 24-26, 25-21, and 25-19.
After starting the season 1-2, the Vikings have won their last six matches to improve to 7-2 overall. Long Beach leads the WSC standings with a 2-0 mark.
Long Beach nearly had a sweep, but fell short in completing a late comeback in Set 2. The Vikings trailed 19-12 before rallying to tie the match at 21. But Moorpark went on to pull out its only win of the night, 26-24.
Sophomore outside hitter Parker Del Re (Highland, AZ) had a big night for the Vikings, leading LBCC with 19 kills to go along with eight digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Devon Taylor (Lakewood HS) posted 13 kills and seven digs while freshman middle blocker Aniefre Etim-Thomas (Wilson HS) totaled a seven blocks with eight kills. Sophomore setter Chris Austin (Henderson, NV) collected a match-high 49 assists and 11 digs to go with four kills and four blocks.
With the loss, Moorpark dropped to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Middle blocker Erik Jansen led the Raiders with 21 kills.
Long Beach returns to action on Wednesday (Mar 16) when it hosts El Camino College in 6 p.m. WSC match.
