Vikings Dominate in First Home Win, Improve to 10-0
The women’s water polo team had a commanding 18-4 victory over Rio Hondo.
The Long Beach City College women's water polo team remained perfect on the season with a commanding 18-4 victory over Rio Hondo in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings improve to 10-0 overall.
Long Beach's offense was firing on all cylinders as four different players recorded hat tricks. Sophomore Leilani Sanchez led the way with four goals and three assists, while Miranda Ferguson matched her with four goals and added two assists of her own. Madalyn Barley also netted four goals, and Ahmaja Rodgers tallied three goals with two assists to round out the scoring leaders.
The Vikings also showed strong team play, finishing with 15 total assists. Devon Fletcher chipped in with a goal and two assists, while Leslie Vargas and Alyssa Artist each added a pair of assists to keep the offense moving.
On the defensive end, Long Beach was equally sharp. Sanchez and Barley each grabbed a steal, while Artist and Maya Lopez contributed key takeaways. In the cage, Maya Jennings recorded seven saves in two quarters of action, while Sophia Santsche-Chavez also tallied two saves over two quarters.
With their first home victory secured, the Vikings now turn their attention to tournament play this weekend at Mt. SAC. Long Beach will open against Cuesta College and American River College on Friday, Sept. 26.
