The Long Beach City College softball team shook off an early deficit and pulled away for a 9-1 win over Riverside City College on Thursday afternoon at the KLAC Softball Complex.
Long Beach fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but answered right back in the bottom half. Sienna Rievley singled, Zara Mineo followed with a hit, and Madison Fao delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
The Vikings moved in front for good in the third. After Madison Fao was hit by a pitch, Ali Calderon tripled down the left-field line to bring in a run, and Michelle Cervantes followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1.
Long Beach added another run in the fourth when Zara Mineo singled and later scored on Riannah Maulupe's RBI double to right, stretching the lead to 4-1.
The Vikings broke it open in the sixth with five more runs. Sienna Rievley and Zara Mineo both scored on Riannah Maulupe's two-run triple to left center. Ali Calderon added a sacrifice fly, and later in the inning Mikaela Pacheco came through with an RBI double after entering as a pinch hitter.
At the plate, Riannah Maulupe led the way with two hits, including a double and a triple, while driving in three runs. Madison Fao also had two hits and an RBI, Michelle Cervantes went 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI, and Mikaela Pacheco added two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Sienna Rievley scored twice, and Zara Mineo finished with two hits and two runs scored.
In the circle, Ella Haugo was outstanding in relief. After entering in the first inning, she tossed six shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out six to earn the win.
The Vikings will return to the field on Friday, March 20 at LA Harbor College, with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
