The Long Beach City College women's basketball team opened up its 2010-11 home and South Coast Conference schedule with a tough 73-34 loss to No. 6 state-ranked Pasadena City College on Wednesday night at the LBCC Hall of Champions Gym.
Long Beach (1-1, 0-1 SCC) shot just 19 percent (12 for 63) from the field for the game and committed 27 turnovers that Pasadena was able to convert into 32 points.
Pasadena stormed out to an 8-0 lead before LBCC freshman guard Shaveena Gardner hit a three-pointer at the 17:04 mark. But the Lancers answered with an 11-0 scoring over the next seven minutes to go up by 19 points (22-3) midway through the first half.
Long Beach trailed 40-14 at halftime and couldn't get an offensive rhythm going throughout the night.
Freshman center Michelle Chagolla and freshman guard Carmella Morris led the Vikings with eight points each. Freshman forward Tatianna Jefferys had a game-high 10 rebounds to go with three points.
Pasadena (4-0, 1-0 SCC) had four players score in double figures, with forward Marquetta Stokes leading the way with 16 points. Sophomore center Dominque Scott nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Nov. 19) when it travels to East Los Angeles College for a 5 p.m. South Coast Conference game.
